What Is Too Short?

Michael has been the typical girl's dad since Mickey was a baby. I will never forget one time someone gave her a mini skirt and halter top outfit and before I could tactfully put it away (she was never going to wear it) he turned around and said, "She is never going to wear that!"

This dress he says is too short.
This dress he says is getting too short.
This dress he is comfortable with the length.

And so my Aloha Friday question for you is this - how long do you think a dress or skirt should be to be respectable? I have a limit - that first dress is getting to short for me. Any more growth and she won't wear it. That second dress seems fine to me. So, I'm wondering what other people think. Oh and the halter top/mini skirt outfit? I wouldn't even donate it because it seemed like something no one should put on a baby. :)

  1. I prefer mid-calf if possible, for the coverage provided when the girls are active and wiggly. I generally draw the official line at knee-length (meaning the knees are covered), but I have broken my own rules now and then. It is hard to find store bought stuff that is long enough.

  2. To me the first one is fine with the tights, but without the tights no, but in the winter time. In the summertime it would be okay with a pair of pink shorts under it. After that the second & third one is fine if she likes it. It's just what style you prefer on your child midi or full length. My children all wore knee length, but I always liked tights (with ruffle bottoms.

    1. Yes, that is a very good point. In the summer I would not think that was long enough either. I feel she can get away with it in the winter when she is wearing tights anyway. :) I think it is because I am so short that I always go knee length because otherwise I am tripping on it.

  3. I think the length of a girls dress should be decided by her parents, that decision is no one elses business.

    1. Fair enough!! That is true for so many things and yet so many people feel the need to comment on everything and anything!! :)

  4. The 1st and 2nd seem fine to me. Little girls can get away with short-ish dresses for a limited amount of time.

  5. I extend the life of dresses by putting having my daughter where stretch pants under them. I prefer dresses without stretch pants be below the knee.

    1. I use the tights as a similar buffer. We have to talk about the nightgown. I have a few questions. I'll facebook you later tonight though. :)

  6. I just wish my girl still wanted to wear dresses! At almost 12, I now say not more than a couple of inches above the knee, but- she also of the age that she isn't going to be "playing" in a dress, she knows how to be modest in a skirt/dress. Also- she is so tall and thin that finding anything that was good and long would mean it was HUGE on her. When she was little and wore dresses more, I focused on having her wear shorts underneath, and making sure she knew how to play modestly with dresses/skirts on, which is probably why she stopped wearing them ;) I do CRINGE with the Irish Dance costumes where the skirts/dresses HAVE to be short, and you can see all the way to the fancy underwear when they dance-lol.

  7. What a sweet little girl! I love the last dress.

Talking about modesty and "respectability" gets tricky. A girl can be immodest in an ankle length dress. The true definition of modesty is to not draw undue attention to oneself. May God give us the wisdom to teach modesty in the context of grace!

  8. I think just above the knee is the perfect location - especially with tights. Not too long to trip over and enough coverage for moving around. As someone that used to have to do skirt checks at a private school, I am well aware of what does NOT look ok ;)

  9. I think right above the knees is okay. However, my kids usually wear shorts under their dresses. :-)

  10. My girls wear skirts that are about 3 inches above their knees. Sometimes even shorter. The skirts usually have the shorts sewn in. Since it's winter they also wear leggings. In the summer, their skirts are a little shorter and more flouncy. Again, they have the skirts sown in. If not, the oldest wears biker shorts. The youngest is still in diapers, so she doesn't have to wear shorts.

    1. I've never put shorts under their dresses. Tights in the winter but never shorts. That seems so uncomfortable to me - as in I would hate to wear that. Of course, I don't like to wear any kind of dress or skirt. :/

    2. The biker shorts are really comfortable. The skort, or scooters, are nice because they're sewn right to the skirt. I'm not a huge fan of skirts, but I loathe long skirts/dresses. I prefer them to be above the knee. Any length can be a problem when kids start playing. That's where the shorts come in handy.
