Dear Mikaela,

Oh my sweet, sweet baby girl. You are so old these days. So big. Half way between your third and fourth birthdays. The last week and a half I have seen you shine like never before. All of a sudden you are just so grown up and capable. You are able to talk when you are upset. You have managed to ask for what you need. You are sweet, compassionate, smart, funny and empathetic. Oh my sweet girl you are just an amazing little girl. Sometimes I am just absolutely in awe of you.

One of my absolute favorite things about who you are is how large your capacity for empathy is. I first noticed it in the way you have dealt with Deanna. I know that competing for my attention is not always easy for you. I know that when you are sad and Deanna needs me it is hard on you. But every time you will tell me that Deanna needs me. You will come running from across the house to tell me that Deanna needs me. If I do not immediately come to get her you get very mad at me. You sit next to her in the car and you are very good at soothing her when she gets fussy. The few times we have moved your seat over for one reason or another you are very upset that you cannot help her. And the smile on your face when you say, "Mommy! I made her stop crying," is amazing. Since then I have noticed your empathy for your brother, for other kids and for people in general. I love this quality of yours. I really do.

For a long time you have been complaining that you don't know how to read. So, about a week ago I busted out the phonics readers and started teaching you how to read. It has been so amazing watching you. You are young and it will be awhile before you can can read easily and on your own but still just this small step is so amazing to watch. You are so excited and happy when you read something. It is awesome!

You are a little performer. I swear you were born to be on stage. You love your dancing class. You model for my shop all the time - and you are super fun to take pictures of because you love it so much. You sing non stop. You sit in the back of the car and sing. You sing while you play. You ask me to watch you sing. I love it. I am so proud of every part of you. You truly are an amazing girl. I love you so very much, my sweet girl.

Love,
Mommy
