A few weeks ago Big Sister started having nasty sores in her diaper area. I originally thought they were a yeast infection. She had what we believed was a yeast infection before (now I am not so sure). It looked like this:
(okay that is not really her it is a picture from google images but for privacy reasons I think it inappropriate to post pictures of that area). And then the infection got worse and she started to have sores that looked like this:
And they were open and they hurt and she cried like crazy when I changed her. It was awful.
So, since that night was cloth diapers chat night on twitter I figured I would ask the other mamas!! And they all agreed with my original diagnoses of a yeast infection (based on my description). A few said I might need a prescription yeast fighter. Well, is just so happened that Big Sister's one year check up was the next day and so I asked the doctor.
She took one look and told me that it was a staph infection. And it was pretty bad. She gave me bactroban to put on it - three times a day. It makes me wonder how long she had it. How many of the "yeast" outbreaks were really staph? I have been beating myself up for not getting her treatment before. She has had persistent rash for quite sometime. It would flare up for a day or two and then with the help of an antifungal ointment it would go away. And then a few weeks later it would come back. Never as bad as this time but still if I had taken her earlier maybe the sores would never have gotten so bad. Maybe she would not have had to be in so much pain.
Now, the biggest problem with a Staph infection is that it is highly contagious. So, I have been taking several precautions with her in order to keep it from spreading and to keep it from reinfecting her. What am I doing?
Well, first I cut up fleece liners from a several yards of fleece I had lying around the house (we are so lucky I over buy every time I want to make something - hee hee). One for each and every diaper. I put them on in between her and the diaper - even though she is only getting the cream three times a day. Then the liners go in a separate wet bag. Since we use cloth wipes those go in the bag with the liners. Every night she uses a fresh clean towel - never reusing the one from the night before. The towel must be folded up so that the side that dried her is not facing out and I leave it in the laundr room. Then on wash night the towels and the liners go in the wash for a first rinse with half a cup of vinegar. Then I throw in the rest of the diapers and wash as usual. Luckily, the weather has been really nice and the clothesline has been an option - otherwise I probably would have dried the liners, wipes and towels and then put them on the line anyway - for some extra sun germ killing. And, of course, Hubby and I are washing out hands anytime we come in contact with her or with any item that has touched her.
In under a week the rash was almost completely gone. And now - even though it has been almost two weeks I am still using liners (I actually think I will keep using the liners - I like the way they are easy to clean) and new nightly towels, etc. Because it makes me feel better. Like the infection is less likely to come back. I know at some point I will stop and just go back to normal but for now I still feel like I am in "fight the staph" mode. So, if your baby has a rash that looks like either of the above, or if it just will not go away, ask your doctor if it could be a staph infection. And make sure to take lots of precautions.

yup, definitely looks like MRSA to me....
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this! Hopefully I will never have to deal with this, but if I do, I will be referring back to this post!! I am glad you got it under control!
ReplyDeleteYikes! Thank goodness you got it cleared up! We dealt with a horrible rash here not too long ago. It wasn't Staph, but it very easily could have been. Don't beat yourself up over it, it happens. I like the ideas of the fleece liner though. I use old t-shirts that I cut up when we have to use cream. I may go buy a yard of fleece though. I bet that would help with absorbancy too right?
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. My little guy got a really bad rash and but his was a yeast rash. It is not fun to deal with.
ReplyDeleteShaun, I am not sure if the fleece adds absorbancy or not - it does pull all the moisture away from her skin which I think helps with overall rash control. I definitely recommend them. And really clean up is so easy with the fleece liners.
ReplyDeleteAs, Just fair warning the first few times she had similar symptoms (it has been somewhat of an on-going battle) yeast cream cleared it up. Rashes just stink - no way around it
And to everyone I just want to say that Hubby was talking to someone who's baby got a Staph infection right after immunization. Now please do not think I am saying immunizations give you a staph infection - but the baby's immune system was a little run down and that is how it happened. My point is if your child seems run down keep an even closer eye on any rashes. :)
Great post! I just wanted to add that a yeast rash typically has smaller bumps in a greater number than staph. Hope Big Sister continues to heal and feel better:)
ReplyDeleteOUCH! I hope she continues to stay well! I forgot how much I loved our fleece liners why did I stop using them? lol oh yes I got lazy ;)
ReplyDeleteYikes! I'm glad you shared your experiences. It's so easy to assume that a rash "down there" is diaper rash, but sometimes that's not the case. A couple months ago my son somehow ended up with Coxsackie Virus, and one of his symptoms was a rash in his diaper area. He had never really had diaper rash, so I should have guessed something was up. Eventually he did run a fever, which I brought him to the doctor for, and it turned out he had painful sores in his mouth as well. Poor little guy.
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard to know sometimes if you're worrying about nothing, or if you should bring them in to be seen.
Elliott was in the hospital for days 20, 21, and 22 of his life with a staph infection on his diaper area. His was not from shots, but he probably picked it up at birth. (Not from me, though, I'm clean down there!!!)
ReplyDeleteThe bactroban worked really well for him.
How freaking weird is it that I *just* got home from the doctor with Erik...he's also got an infection caused by staph, but under his eye. We have to make sure his finger nails are kept short so he doesn't scratch and spread. We had to deal with MRSA with DH when Nicholas was just a baby, so I'm hoping this doesn't turn to that. Hope Big Sister heals soon!
ReplyDeletePoor kiddo. Sorry she had that rash. Glad that you said it has cleared up. Good luck keeping the staph away. My mother is a microbiologist so we always hear about the nasty bugs that are gong around.
ReplyDeleteTo the person who said it definitely looks like MRSA to them, just because it was staph does not mean it was MRSA. MRSA is just a particular strain of staph. You can not tell by just looking at a rash that it is MRSA. There are several different strains of staph, with MRSA being the worst and most drug resistent. MRSA is the big scary one, but not every staph infection is big and scary in that it will almost surely kill you. Staph is extremely common, it is pretty much every where and we almost all have it on our bodies or in our noses. Most of the time our bodies keep the bacteria in check and it does not harm us. I would venture to guess (and I am not a doctor, but do have experience with staph infections) that Big Sister's rash did not start out as staph, but that she had a rash caused by another source and that once the skin was broken from that rash the staph was able to penatrate and the infection came about.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Impetigo
ReplyDeleteOh, I hope she gets better! DD has constant rashes but at her nine month last week the doctor said it was from teething and could be a little yeast...a local doctor made a combo called "poole's" it works great. I did start putting a couple of drops of Tea Tree Oil in the wipe solution this week and it has really helped. Today I kept the same combo but added two drops of GSE. I will keep you posted on how that works!
ReplyDeleteYikes good thing your doctor caught it! Hope she gets better soon!
ReplyDeleteOh no! I hope she is feeling better now. How awful! And thank you for sharing with other parents so we know what to look for.
ReplyDeletePoor baby! I'm so glad she's feeling better! I hate having a baby in pain and feeling like you don't know what else to do!! Awful feeling!
ReplyDeleteOn a different note, did you do anything to prep the fleece, or just regular washing and stuff?

I've seen a lot of female and male yeast infection pictures and these are not as bad as the ones I've seen so I think the treatment will be easily applied and effective in this case.

I am dealing with identical symptoms on my 13 month old baby boy right now. One of the boils bust in the tub tonight. I was thinking it was staff. It
ReplyDeleteLooks almost exactly like the 2 pictures shown above. Guess I am doctor bound in the morning.
My daughter has had similar lesions in her diaper area that the doctor believes to be staph. She is starting a course of Augmentin now, and we're hoping it'll clear up. As soon as a sore "opens" again, I am to swab it so they can culture for less dangerous forms of staph and MRSA.
ReplyDeleteI clothed diapered for the first year of my son's life. He got a staph infection and I treated as instructed by the doctor and it went away. BUT when I went back to cloth diapers (we used disposable while treating the staph) the staph infection would come back. The doctor suggested that we stop using cloth diapers. So we were using disposable and he got a yeast infection. What are we doing wrong! So ready to be done with diapers!!!
ReplyDeletemy daughter had the same thing a diper rash that just never went away it was under control ever now and then and would come back then one week it was horriable she looked like a stawberry down there took here to the dr and it was a staph infection, i feel horriable because she has probably been going through this for a while huggies natural diapers worked and hypoalergenic wipes and vaseline sometimes a yeast med pay attention and take your kid to the dr
ReplyDeleteOne person said 'it looks like impetigo' well impetigo IS usually caused by staph (staph or strep bacteria are the 2 most common culprits, with staph being #1)
ReplyDeleteSorry but cloth diapers hold too much bacteria, and if you don't boil them with bleach, you can't kill it. Sunlight doesn't kill staph. Disposable for me all the way. My son never had a diaper, yeast, or staph infection.
Also, let them be naked for awhile here and there every day. it feels good for them, naturally allows moisture to dry, and helps to stop diaper rashes, etc.
It is a staph infection and is looking ugly.I don't know how she is living it and should give a try to antibacterial soap or anti dandruff shampoo. May be they will work.
