Backyard Camping

So, like I said last night Hubby came home and announced that we would be camping in the backyard. So, he and Big Brother set up the tent - the same tent that he has had his whole life, the tent his dad bought before he was even married yet. I was trying to convince Hubby that we should get a new tent if we are going to do any amount of real camping. It takes an hour to set up - but in all fairness it is in great condition! We camped in the backyard once last summer (yes, while I was pregnant). And it poured outside while we were in there and we were completely dry. So, we are keeping the tent. Ah well, I guess as long as he is doing the setting up I should not complain.

Now you already know that I do not feel that fires have any place in our small backyards and our town agrees. Fires in the backyard are illegal. That makes it a little bit harder to make the camping popcorn (jiffy pop) and the roasted marshmallows - well, okay smores. But we were not about to let a little thing like no fires stop us. We just used the outdoors cooking appliance - yup, I am talking about the grill. :)

One of the nicest things about the night was that Big Brother and I got to spend about twenty minutes hanging out and talking - just the two of us - while Hubby put Big Sister to bed (in the tent). So, we are sitting there and I am asking him what he thinks about kindergarten coming up and what he thinks about his new sister coming and other things. And I asked him what he was looking forward to doing most when Little Sister came home and are you ready for his answer? "Hugging her." Doesn't that just melt your heart? I have tears in my eyes even as I write about it. He is so sweet.

All in all it was a fun night and I am so glad that we did it. I do have to say that it gave me a brand new appreciation for people who co-sleep with an older child and a baby. Big Sister woke up at around 3:30am and then we were ALL awake with her until 5am. She saw/heard her brother ask why she was awake and she decided it was time to play. The worst part was that poor Hubby had to get up at 4:30am and go to work. :( The kids and I did get to go back to sleep and we even slept until 9am. And we woke up this is how we started our morning:

  5. I LOVED camping in the backyard as a kid.
We actually cooked smores out in my parents' side yard tonight. Although in the heart of the expanding part of the city in which they live, their house, being ungodly old, is actually still unincorporated and zoned for agriculture, so they still get to have fires. We can still have fires here too, but I wouldn't want to, as i really don't love smelling like smoke. That said, we live in the last villiage in our county that allows yard waste to be burnt. Not very ecologically sound, but good for a party.

  8. We are hoping to get the tent up by the end of next weekend! So fun! I feel the same way about fires in the backyard. Roasted marshmellows on the bbq are just as good.
